John Stares the
elder deceased holdeth by lease dated 25 March 1652 for 99 years
if John Stares (21) his sonne, Nicholas Stares (33) his brother
and James Haberlie (65, dead) or either of them so long live.
The Place with a dwelling house and barne in Berry and 70 acres
of land thereunto belonging. By the yearly rent of 28/- and for
an heriot 6/4d.
The said John Stares the elder life(??) wife holdeth
by lease dated 26 April 1654 for 99 years. If William Stares (17,
dead), James Stares (15) and Charles Stares (10) his sonnes or
either of them so long live one messuage or tenemant called Greenes
Tenement and 20 acres of land thereunto belonging by the yearly
rent of 13/4d and for an heriot of 20/-.
Henry Sleapar(?) (70, dead) holdeth
by lease dated [blank] for term of his life four closes of land
called Eadilands, containing 10 acres by the yearly rent of 8/-
and paying yearly to the Bishop of Winton [Winchester] 3/-.
John Browne holdeth
in right of Anne (59) his wife (dead) for term of her life as
by a paper under Mr Lasilie(?) his hand appears dated 24 October
1645. Certain grounds called Seymours containing 6 acres by the
yearly rent of 10/-.
The reversion of the premises is granted unto John
for the lives of Marye { } and Elizabeth his daughters. By the
yearly rent and performing the covenants in the lease Fure(?)
George Bearde (53)
holdeth by lease dated 24 June 1645 Charles I for 99 years if
here the said George, Mary (26) and Anne (23) his daughters so
long live. One tenement and one close containing 24 acres and
a little ground thereunto adjoining containing ½ an acre
by the yearly rent of 24/- and for an hereto 6/8d.
Thomas Harford (dead)
holdeth by lease dated 29 September 1655 for 99 years if here
the said Thomas, William Harford and Elizabeth Harford children
of Edward Harford of Titchfield so long live. One cottage with
a garden containing one and a half acres. By the yearly rent of
6/8d and 2 capons.
John Hamman (40)
holdeth by lease dated 25 March 1652 for term of his own life,
Francis (40) his nono wife and Frances (19) their daughter one
messuage or tenement, one garden plot and 3 acres of land. By
the yearly rent of 6/8d and for an heriot of 3/4d. Discharging
the rent to the high and chief lord.
Christopher Brunker (46)
of Portsmouth holdeth by lease dated 29 September 1657 for 99
years if here the said Christopher, Elizabeth Brunker (14) his
daughter and Robert Henty (32) so long live. One messuage or tenement
in the Highstreet in Portsmouth bounded with the land or tenement
of Edward Chapman on the eastpart; the land or tenement of Robert
Page on the westpart; the church on the northpart and the Highstreet
on the southpart. By a yearly rent of 2/-.
Robert Stares (35),
Mary (26 dead) his wife and Katherine (3) his daughter hold by
copie dated 25 October 6 Carolus Secundi for term of their lives
successively according to the custom of the said mannor. One tenement
with the appurtanances called Great Stones, containing in arable
lands and pasture 65 acres. By the yearly rent of 43/- and 3 capons
and the best beast for an heriot and by all other customs and
services.
Francis Beel (70)
holdeth by copie dated {blank} for term of his life Peter (47,
dead) his sonne according to the custom. One tenement called Hollbrooke
containing 40 acres of arable and 4 acres of meadow. By the yearly
rent of 23/4d and for an heriot of best beast.
Clement the
wife of Richard Waldron holdeth by copie dated {blank} for term
of her life according to the custom 13 acres of arable land called
Beeks. By the yearly rent of 20/- and by all other customs and
services. (signed by Thomas Pafford).
The reversion of the premises is granted unto Sarah
and Dorothy daughters of the said Richard. By copie dated 24 October
21 Carolus I. For term of their lives successively according to
the custom paying the rent and services due from thence.
John Browning (63,
dead), Thomas Pafford (dead) and William Pafford (6) sons of William
Pafford of Lee marks hold by copie dated 28 April 15 Carolus Secundi
for term of their lives successively according to the custom One
tenement containing 30 acres of arable and 7 acres of pasture
(Except the coppice called Bratlands containing 2 acres). By the
yearly rente of 26/8 and 1 capon and for an heriot of best beast.
Agnis Basset (75)
als Knight holdeth by copie dated 5 October 3 Carolus 1 for her
life according to the custom one tenement with the appurtenances
containing in arable lands and pasture 56 acres, whereof there
lieth in one close 7 acres; in another close 3 acres; in one other
close 2 acres and a half; and other close 2 acres and a half;
in one other close 2 acres and a half; in one other close 6 acres;
in one other close 3 acres and a parrock thereunto adjoining containing
one acre and a half; in one other close 7 acres; in three closes
called Hoares 9 acres; and in one other close of meadow2 acres;
and in one parrock of mead half an acre; in one close of mead?[wood?]
called Wheatlands of 4 acres; and in one other close of wood 2
acres (Except Lampas coppice containing 3 acres, Furzecroft coppice
containing 2 acres and Hoares coppice containing one acre and
a half). By the yearly rent of 63/- and 2 capons and 2/- a year
to the Bishop of winton. For a chief rent payable out of the said
coppice called Lampas. And for a heriot the best beast.
The reversion of the premises is granted by two several
copies unto John Basset (32) sonne of the said Agnis and Marie
(23) his nono wife for term of their lives. Paying the customs
and services.
John Fielder (34)
Anne (33) his wife and Elizabeth (28) his sister hold by copie
dated 28 April 15 Carolus Secundi for term of their lives successively
according to custom one tenement with the appurtenances containing
24 acres of arable and 6 acres of pasture and common of pasture
for 12 beasts in Chark Common. By the yearly rent of 24/- and
2 capons and the best beast for an heriot.
Robert Brooker (60) Robert (dead)
Anthonie (17) his sonnes hold by copie dated 28 April 15 Carolus
Secundi for term of their lives successively according to the
custom one cottage and 30 acres of land by the yearly rent of
23/- and for an heriot the best beast.
Mary now(?)
wife of William Crosseman, William White and John Crosseman hold
by copie dated 28 April 15 Carolus Secundi for term of their lives
successively according to the custom half an acre of customary
land lying in Stubbington called by the name of Couper's Parrock
of foresaid Manor. By the yearly rent 15d. For an heriot of 15d.
William Reeve, Elizabeth
his nono wife and Anne Roy hold by copie dated 28 April Carolus
I for terme of their lives successively according to the custom.
Five halves of ground containing 2 seed acres and halfe called
Peckmans lying in Stubbington parish of the said Manor. By the
yearly rent of 5/4d: and by all other customs and services.
Anne Plover,
Anne and Margaret her daughters hold by copie dated 28 April 15
Carolus Secundi for terme of their lives successively according
to the customs one cottage, one garden, and one perch of waste
land lately inclosed out of the Lords waste nee? The Lords pounds
within the Tything of Stubbington. By the yearlie rent of 20d
and 2 capons at the chief of the Lord.
Mabell Newstubb als
Williams holdeth by copie dated [blank] for term of her life according
to the custom one half acre of land called Triggs lying in Stubbington
parish of the said Manor. By the yearly rent of 15d and for an
heriot 15d.
The reversion of the premises is granted by two severall
copies unto John Francklen the older and John Francklen the younger.
By the rent, heriot and services aforesaid.
John Pickford holds
by copie dated [blank] for terme of his life according to the
custome one cottage, one garden and thirty perches of land lying
in Stubbington pcell(?) of the said Manor. By the yearly rent
of 15d and for an heriot 15d.
The reversion of the premises is granted by copie dated 25 April 15 Carolus Secondi
To Thomas Francklen for term of his life according
to the customs. By the rent, heriot and services aforesaid.
Note:
Heriot This is paid when one of the parties
to the agreement changes. Thus a heriot is paid when a son takes
over the lease from his dead father, and likewise is charged when
the landowner dies and his heirs take over.
Dates For GLHS members developing their characters note that this document is dated 1663 and ages of the lease and copy holders have to be carefully adjusted!
